PRYING INTO THE CONSCIENCE OF ASUU MEMBERS

Prof. A.F. Umar

Department of Microbiology,

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi - Nigeria

In the quiet of my sitting room, I told a friend that ‘I am going to pick a pen’, and write about the sad and retrogressive burning issue about the imbroglio between ASUU and FG! And here l am, with a piece of my mind.

Anywhere, the trending discourse is about ASUU strike! You will hear statements like…. ASUU is very selfish! ….. ASUU have gotten their match in this government! ….. We are waiting for who blink first? ….. the government has nothing to lose! …… ASUU should or should not be paid their withheld salaries! ….. the strike has lingered too long and has lost its appeal. And many more!

Amusing, but not funny! This I consider prying into the conscience of ASUU members for the wrong reasons. A reminder is that ASUU is on strike for revitalization of the system, this is to make the students more comfortable in their learning environment! They are also fighting for better condition of service, for the system to be attractive for the best brain, thus reducing brain drain and appeal to international scholars. This will ultimately attract foreign students, halt capital flight (payment of school fees out of the shores of the country) and improve competitiveness, amongst other advantages!

To ASUU members and any well- meaning education stakeholder, this is Patriotism. A fight to salvage a dying system! ASUU members have taken it upon themselves as the last bastion safeguarding education in Nigeria. ASUU members are putting everything on the line!

Primary and secondary education in Nigeria are gone! Now, every single day private schools are springing up for money milking purpose. WAEC pronounced 76% PASS for registered candidates in 2022! Surprisingly, only few can make a coherent sentence in English, and its usually a nightmare for lecturers when they come to 100 Level in the university. Whose fault? Now the bandwagon is for establishing private universities. At my last count, we have 117 private universities, as against 49 federal and 57 state-owned universities. This is really unprecedented! Only few of these universities can be called citadel of learning. They can best be described as money making ventures! Business! If you will also recall ASUU is fighting proliferation of universities, not because of anything, but STANDARD maintenance!

The government usually regard ASUU as very stubborn! And they have to be put in their place as mere government employees! Wrong! Is this right? the answer is capital NO! ASUU members are intellects, and will not accept master-slave relationship. This is where the principle of collective bargaining sprung up! Their wages have to be discussed in a round-table and agreed according to international standards, as universities are universal! They are unique set of professionals. If a Nigerian academic travel abroad, he or she should fit in automatically and comfortably. Or do you think the managers of our economy to function as square pegs in advanced countries. They will be dismissed on day one! Serious countries look up to the academics to solve their problems. They are regarded as critical thinkers, the life wires and assets of their countries. If you desire development place premium to your education! USA has Harvard, MIT and Stanford; UK has Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial college; Malaysia has UPM and UTM; more examples can be seen in India, South Africa and others places!

In Nigeria, we are still at the stage of stopping salaries, just because some forward-looking sensible individuals have said the right thing has to be done correctly. This is considered an affront! They have to be taught a lesson! Parents applauding the government decision of NO WORK, NO PAY! Is ASUU responsible for all those number of months that they are on strike? They have listened to various stakeholders and issued pleading letters to the authorities to avert shutting down! Whose fault? What they forget is that an educated person is naturally arrogant. He or she will die in silent but will never beg! The university consist of two categories of people, the teachers and students, others are support staff. That brings out to light why the non-academics called off their strike! To me this is cosmetic! The classes are there, let them start teaching! Oops.

Aspiring academic staff must have first class or second class upper to be considered a graduate assistant or a masters degree, with good standing to be admitted into PhD program or PhD degree to be appointed lecturer I or II, depending on research output/reputable and relevant publications. And this does not stop until you become a Professor! An academic staff is always in-training or being mentored. How do you expect them to accept miserable salaries or an award, which is synonymous to modern day slavery! Ouch!

Through this training they are mentored on integrity and sacrifice! Have you ever seen any problem with leadership succession in ASUU? It is one-for-all; All-for-one! The patriotism of ASUU has never been in doubt.

Now breaking the truce!! For ASUU members, the present strike is a make or mar struggle! For the soul of education! For tertiary education to survive! For the system to work! For the Nigerian academic to raise their shoulders in international gathering of academics! For the government, it is a test of might! It is about ego! It is about blackmail! It is about the control of funds!

But now is time for sober reflections! ASUU’s nose has been bloodied, may get tired, but their conscience will never die. Through this strike, ASUU has exposed IPPIS irregularities. The battle line has been drawn! Forget about the six months old strike! Now is when the mother of all strike will start, GOD FORBID!

A lot of academics have started losing interest in the noble profession of teaching. The young and intelligent scholars are leaving, signifying brain drain. Older scholars will hang on and wait for opportunity to exit! This signifies the beginning of the end of education in Nigeria. SAD!

This strike has to end for the sake of posterity. Vice Chancellors have to come out their comfort zone and help proffer solution, as heads of universities! Ego have to give way! Sense of reasoning has to play role! The government has to come out clean! They cannot implement no work, no pay, for a strike they prosecute! They delay and still delaying negotiations. We have to salute ASUU for coming this far! Compromises have to made to bring back the students to the classrooms! The consequences of not heeding to these suggestions will have far reaching effect in years to come.

As it is being said “when you want to destroy a country, just destroy its educational system, then it comes crumbling like a pack of cards”! And no nation can develop beyond its educational standards. That explains where we are in the comity of nations!

Now I will drop my pen, Adios!

The 9 keys to a successful interview

1. Read up about the Company you are Applying for.

You will find a wealth of information about history, business lines and news on their website. And by all means read about their ambition, strengths, social and environmental commitments, etc. show them that you’re familiar with them, believe me its the best way to show them you’re interested in the position.

2. Think about your career path
During the interview, you are expected to tell them where you see yourself in five years’ time. Tell us about the job prospects you have in mind, the geographic or functional mobility opportunities you are interested in, and what the company can do for you (by way of training, for example) as much as what you can do for the Group.

3. Practice beforehand

All too often, people skip this step—even though it will help you feel more self-assured when you come in for your interview. You can practice alone or with someone. Rehearse your answers to the questions we are bound to ask (“tell us about yourself”, “why are you interested in this job offer”, etc.”). But be yourself: if you just recite over-prepared answers, your memory might fail you, they might sound unnatural and your interviewer will probably be unimpressed.

4. Prepare your documents

Don’t turn up emptyhanded. Besides a notepad and pen, bring a binder with a few copies of your resumé (after double-checking it for typos, spelling and the like) and maybe even a few examples of your previous work or references relating to the vacancy. Doing this will help you feel more comfortable during the interview, and will bolster your application.

5. Plan ahead

As they say, you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression. Arriving late, for whatever reason, sends the wrong message. Better be safe than sorry: think about how you’re going to get here and allow for anything that might go wrong (traffic jams, train cancellations, etc.). Ideally, be here 10 minutes early to catch your breath before the interview.

6. Show them what you’ve got

Many candidates don’t “sell” themselves enough during their interview. Be self-confident and enthusiastic when talking about your experience and skills. Show us that we believe in the same values: that you’re as open to the world, keen on teamwork and eager to take initiative as we are. Show the recruiter that you will hit the ground running in your team and have no trouble on-boarding the company’s processes.

7. Check your social-media image

Did you know that 85% of recruiters run online searches on the candidates they meet? So do the same: Google your name and then search it on social networks to make sure nothing you want to keep private is public. Adjust your privacy settings if necessary. And keep your LinkedIn profile up to date, in particular, to avoid any confusion about your exact academic and professional background. If you want to remove any information about you from Google searches, you can do so here.

8. Look the part

Again, first impressions matter. Be yourself, but dress for the occasion. Pay attention to your look and, most importantly, smile a lot! Your body language is as important as what you say.

9. Ask questions, think about how to wrap up the interview

To end on a positive note, think of two or three questions about the job and the team, for example. Interviews aren’t one-way interrogations: You are expected to ask questions to make sure the job is right for you. And it will show us that you’re keen on this job, not just a job. Questions like “Do you have room form advance training and career development” ?, “What do you want candidate applying for this position to achieve in the first year” ? “When should I expect feedback from you” ?

The Northern Students Support for Atiku has applied to withdraw from its petition challenging the election of Mal Uba Sani as the Senator Representing Kaduna Central

In a statement given by the Organization chief press secretary Alhassan Muhammad which was signed by the Secretary General Mal Abdulaziz Musa Alhassan which states that the allegation against the senator will not hold any water so it is thereby withdrawn.

Mal Uba Sani as the Senator Representing Kaduna Central

In a letter written on Friday August 16 2019 the Group said it decided to withdraw after a close evaluation of the probability of the petition not succeeding due to some lapses towards the evidences.

Abdulaziz said the Group decision to withdraw from the petition was not based on any political agreement with the ruling party.

“What the Group said is that they are no more interested in the petition because it is in the interest of peace of the nation to withdraw as the petitioners.

Islam and Terrorism: Is there a meeting point ?

Every time an act of terror or shooting occurs, Muslims closely watch the news with extreme trepidation praying that the suspect is not Muslim. This is not because these terrorists are likely to be Muslim but rather because in the instances where they happen to be, we see amplified mass media coverage and extreme unjustified hatred towards Muslims. I can easily remember just not less than a year ago, there were many mass shootings in schools across the United States, and coincidentally, they happened to be non-Muslims; however they were tagged “lone-wolf”, “drugs”, “mentally disabled” or something similar excuse being recycled when the suspect in a terrorist attack is a Caucasian.  Just recently on may 18th 2018, my friend Auwal Ahmad’s classmate, Sabika sheik from Pakistan and both attending the Youth exchange and study (YES) program along nine others were killed in Santa Fe, Texas during a school shooting, but that too like any other attack involving Muslims attracts little media attention.
As a Muslim, I am tired of condemning terrorist attacks being carried out by inherently violent people who hijack my religion. I am tired of condemning these attacks to people who are calm and apathetic when Muslims are killed by these same radicalized terrorists. Therefore I see it as a compulsory upon myself to write this article and backed with facts for clarity to silence this Islamophobia.
I decided to use the picture of German chancellor Angela Merkel and the comrade Turkish President Tayib Erdogan because firstly the two represent the two religions and secondly because of an incident that happened during a press conference in Ankara the Turkish capital last year. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rebuked German Chancellor Angela Merkel for using the expression "Islamist terrorism", saying the phrase was not correct and saddened Muslims.
Speaking after a critical bilateral meeting with Erdogan, Merkel spoke of the need for Turkey and Germany to cooperate even further to fight against terror, including "Islamist terrorism" and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants.
"We spoke in detail about... the questions of the fight against Islamist terrorism, against every form of terrorism, also the terrorism of the PKK," she said alongside Erdogan at his palace in Ankara. "We agree we want to cooperate, we are all affected by this. We agreed to have closer cooperation in the future," she said.
Erdogan, sitting next to Merkel, was stony-faced as she spoke.
German chancellor Angela Merkel and the Turkish President Tayib Erdogan
during a press conference in Ankara in 2017.

Many Muslims oppose any equating of Islam and terror, arguing those who commit crimes purportedly in the name of Islam have nothing to do with a religion that espouses peace.
"This expression 'Islamist terror' seriously saddens us Muslims," Erdogan replied, glancing sternly at the German chancellor.
"Such an expression is not correct because Islam and terror cannot be associated. The meaning of Islam is peace."
He said it would be "saddening" if the term was used because of the crimes of the so-called Islamic State (IS) extremist group, which has been blamed for a string of attacks in Turkey over the last year.
"Please let's not use it. As long as it is used we need to stand against it. As a Muslim president personally I cannot accept that," he said.
The phrase is controversial and previous US president Barack Obama refused to use the phrase "Islamic terrorism", saying such crimes distorted and perverted Islam.
But now President Donald Trump has not shied away from using the term, speaking of "radical Islamic terror" during the election campaign and condemning Obama for not using the term. Anyway that Trumps’ view, any way he is use to being controversial.
My next five points will prove once and for all that Muslims are not terrorists:
1. Non-Muslims make up the majority of terrorists in the United States:
According to the FBI, 94% of terrorist attacks carried out in the United States from 1980 to 2005 have been by non-Muslims. This means that an American terrorist suspect is over nine times more likely to be a non-Muslim than a Muslim. According to this same report, there were more Jewish acts of terrorism in the United States than Islamic, yet when was the last time we heard about the threat of Jewish terrorism in the media? For the same exact reasons that we cannot blame the entire religion of Judaism or Christianity for the violent actions of those carrying out crimes under the names of these religions, we have absolutely no justifiable grounds to blame Muslims for terrorism.
2. Non-Muslims make up the majority of terrorists in Europe: There have been over one thousand terrorist attacks in Europe in the past five years. Take a guess at what percent of those terrorists were Muslim. Wrong, now guess again. It’s less than 2% .
3. Even if all terrorist attacks were carried out by Muslims, you still could not associate terrorism with Islam: There have been 140,000 terror attacks committed worldwide since 1970 . Even if Muslims carried out all of these attacks (which is an absurd assumption given the fact mentioned in my first point), those terrorists would represent less than 0.00009 percent of all Muslims. To put things into perspective, this means that you are more likely to be struck by lightening in your lifetime than a Muslim is likely to commit a terrorist attack during that same timespan.
4. If all Muslims are terrorists, then all Muslims are peacemakers: The same statistical assumptions being used to falsely portray Muslims as violent people can be used more accurately to portray Muslims as peaceful people. If all Muslims are terrorists because a single digit percentage of terrorists happen to be Muslim, then all Muslims are peacemakers because 5 out of the past 12 Nobel Peace Prize winners (42 percent) have been Muslims.
5. If you are scared of Muslims then you should also be scared of household furniture and toddlers: A study carried out by the University of North Carolina showed that less than 0.0002% of Americans killed since 9/11 were killed by Muslims. (Ironically, this study was done in Chapel Hill: the same place where a Caucasian non-Muslim killed three innocent Muslims as the mainstream media brushed this terrorist attack off as a parking dispute ). Based on these numbers, and those of the Consumer Product Safety Commission , the average American is more likely to be crushed to death by their couch or television than they are to be killed by a Muslim. As a matter of fact, Americans were more likely to be killed by a toddler in 2013 than they were by a so-called “Muslim terrorist”.
When a drunk driver causes a car accident, we never blame the car manufacturer for the violent actions of that driver. This is because we understand that we cannot blame an entire car company that produces millions of safe vehicles just because one of their cars was hijacked by a reckless person who used it to cause harm. So what right do we have to blame an entire religion of over 1.6 Billion peaceful people because of the actions of a relatively insignificant few?
I will not deny that terrorism is a real threat, it definitely is. However, it is extremely incorrect to associate the words “Muslim” and “terrorist” when literally all the facts implore you to do otherwise. The only way that we as Americans can defeat terrorism at home and across the world is by accurately targeting its root causes. There have been 355 mass shootings in the United States this year and falsely blaming Muslims for the San Bernardino shooting will do absolutely nothing to address this serious problem. It is time that we begin addressing terrorism on an educated and factual level.
I plead you all to deeply consider the facts mentioned here the next time you see a news headline about Muslims and terrorism. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”. We cannot allow the disparity in media coverage to blind us from the facts and turn us into hateful people, we are smarter than that. and lastly to answer the question you can agree with me based o the above mentioned facts that there is one connection between islam and terrorism.
